- Have your house inspected by a building inspector or architect to find out what structural improvements could prevent or reduce major damage from disasters.
- Add a waterproof veneer to the exterior walls of your home and business
- Raise electrical system components
- Anchor fuel tanks
- Raise or flood-proof HVAC Equipment
- Install Sewer backflow valves
- Protect wells from contamination by flooding
- Maintain EIFS walls
- Protect windows by installing shutters or plywood window covers
- Reinforce double entry doors and reinforce or replace garage doors
- Secure metal siding, metal roofs, built-Up and single-ply roofs and secure composition shingle roofs
- Remove unstable trees or tree limbs that hang unsteadily over a home or business. Consider hiring a professional if you do not think it is a job you should handle alone.
- Elevate utilities to upper floor or attic.
- Anchor your house to the foundation, and anchor the roof to the main frame.
- Install hurricane shutters on windows, and prepare plywood covers for glass doors.
- If your home is in a high risk flood area, on a fault line, or threatened by coastal erosion, consider relocating.
- If you haven't yet bought a house, you might take construction type into account. Frame houses tend to withstand some disasters, while brick homes hold up better in others.
- If you are commencing new construction consider building your home or business with flood-resistant materials
