The nation's first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, endured a severe hurricane in 1772 while living on the island of St. Croix. In a letter to his father, the 15-year old Hamilton described the storm as if "...a total dissolution of nature was taking place."
The letter was eventually published and four years later, Hamilton was a senior aide to General George Washington in the American Revolution.
