The National Hurricane Survival Initiative is a recognized national leader in promoting awareness and personal responsibility, helping create a culture of change in Americans’ attitudes and behavior when confronted by a natural disaster. The initiative has become one of the most successful and comprehensive hurricane awareness campaigns ever undertaken.
This year's initiative combines private sponsorship with public and non-profit organizational support, including the National Hurricane Center, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Emergency Management Association (NEMA), The Salvation Army, Plylox and Travelers Insurance.
In active partnership with the nation's leading experts, the initiative helps prepare the nation's hurricane-vulnerable states for the risk they face during the 2008 season.
This comprehensive public education initiative generated more than 381-million media impressions in 2007 and continues receiving broad visibility, extended positive exposure and recognition as the trusted leader in promoting hurricane safety. Our centerpiece, "The National Hurricane Survival Test" won an Emmy Award in 2005.
The 2008 "National Hurricane Survival Initiative" launches on May 29 with a news conference at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. In addition, during the next six to seven months, our television network affiliated partner stations will broadcast a 30-minute TV special in more than 49 markets from Texas to Maine. Former National Hurricane Center Director, Max Mayfield, serves as special consultant to the initiative. The featured program, "Hurricane Survival 2008," is a fast-paced, visually exciting look at one of Nature's most awesome storms, along with survivor stories and helpful tips on preparing your home and family for the upcoming storm season.
