According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) eight of the ten most expensive presidentially declared disasters were hurricanes, with Hurricane Katrina topping the list, significantly surpassing the other disaster totals at $29 billion in FEMA funding.

The 2008 Atlantic Hurricane season begins June 1… reason enough to begin your preparations and making sure you, your family and business are ready for whatever Nature has to offer this time around.

Scientists are warning 2008 will again be an above-average season for storm activity. Forecasters generally agree the Atlantic entered a so-called “active period” back in 1995 which could last for another 5-10 years.

Atmospheric scientist Dr. William Gray recently predicted 15 named storms for the 2008 storm season, but also said people should not obsess on the number of storms predicted.

“We issue these forecasts,” said Dr. Gray at the 2008 National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, “…to bring attention to the hurricane problem.”

Preparation, and especially the lack of it in many quarters, is a constant concern for those charged with ensuring the public’s safety. While a recent poll indicated more than 60% of those questioned had a hurricane safety plan, emergency planners fear two relatively quiet U.S. storm seasons have lulled many into a sense of false security.
